Tracing Origins

A Request:

There are more surnames in Sindhi community:

Pamnanis , Datwanis , Hindujas ,  Balwanis,  Haryanis , Narang , Ashras , Gangwanis, Teckchandanis etc

We request you to kindly add the above in you list and background of these surnames

My Reply:

The book ‘Origin of Sindhi Surnames’ is a translation from Sindhi, done by my husband Narain Kimatrai

I have added information as given to me by my readers. Please send me history of missing surnames and I shall be happy to add them to my website.

  DATWANIS now changed to PAMNANI

Datwanis who have changed their surname to Pamnani are from Shahdadpur. Kumar Pamnani’s  father: Late Mr. Moolchand who died in 1975 belonged to Shahdadpur. Kumar’s grand father was Phatumal. His father was Mr. Ramchand and Ramchand was son of Late Shri Pamanmal, S/O Mr. Dharamdas.

Can anyone tell Mr Kumar Pamnani the background of their family in SHAHDADPUR.

D Kumar Pamnani

Thank you for doing this. I am in the US and was looking for what I guess all young men look for – their roots. I have read through some of your material and am thankful for it. I still have not been able to get to my ancestory “Hemrajani” – but I have a much better understanding of life in Sindh and of Sindhis.

I am hoping you can perhaps through your website help me complete my missing link of my very unusual upbringing!

My mother was a lady called Ruby Hiranand in Calcutta but sadly gave me away at birth in 1946 to 2 Jewish sisters called Sophie & Mozel who brought me up. Yes you may have guessed to this day, I have never found out which Hiranand my father was? Hoping through your website this mystery could be solved.

Thanks

Dear Shakun,

I know I am asking a lot, but wondered whether you could help me. I am trying to find some information out about my great-Grandfather who was born in Hyderabad in around 1876. his name was Bhojraj Khatanamal. He emigrated to England (I don;t know when exactly), but by 1901 he was living with his wife Kate Khatanmal in Liskeard, Cornwall and working as a silk merchant. By 1905 he was running an ‘Indian and oriental goods warehouse’ in Oxfordshire, later moving to Leamington Spa in Warwickshire by around the 1920’s. He died in 1947 in Leamington Spa. If you have any information on his life or when he emigrated I would be thrilled to hear from you…

Many thanks in anticipation!

ALUBHARWANI/ALWANI (Oct 2006)

…Thankyou very much for your kind reply

I would like to add some details about my father’s relatives(Whatever I have known from my elders)

My great grand father’s name was Bhai Thakurdas.

My granfather’s name was Bhai Parsram.

My father’s name was Bhai Vensimal.

My grandfather Bhai Parsram had 2 sons from first wife: Bhai Lekhrajmal and Bhai Vensimal.

He also had two sons and one daughter from second wife: Bhai Vishindas, Bhai Atmaram and

daughter Gyani who was married into Vatwani family (Indonesia)

My father sired 7 children from first wife: 1, Gangaram, 2, Ishwari, 3,Pritamdas, 4, Savitri

5, Mohini, 6, Valiram and 7th (Myself) Kishin.

I am Born in Bombay in 1941 before partition, therefore I do not know much about our ancestors in Pakistan.

From my father I learnt that we lived opposite Bhaibhand club in Hyderabad Sind

After coming to India I understand we (My father and his brothers and bradari members.) started the surname ALWANI.

I have also learned that our bradari was known as Mukhi ALUBHARWANI.

which was cut short to Alwani after coming to India.

I think above information whatever I know will be useful to trace my earlier roots.

Incase any of your readers wish they may contact me at following email or address.

Thanking you very much

Kishin Vensimal Alwani.

 Dear Shakun

It would be really nice if you could add  this note to”Tracing Roots”.

Chainani’s – Old Sukkur used to be an ancestor called Chainomal (this is my family name now) Gurnaney/Dembla – Old Sukkar (this is the other side of my husbands family)
Mariwala (have had this surname for about 4-5 generation and the original was something to do  with Nagdev) (They built the first house in Hyderabad,Sindh which had a floor or mari and therefore the name change) At one time till the partition they owned department store that sold curios to foreigners who came in at the docks and had the agency for Bata shoes.(this was my maiden surname)
Thadani (Hyderabad Sindh…this is my paternal Grandmothers side of the family and her brother is Mangha Sipahimalani) Gulrajani (this is my mothers side of the family and we already received the family tree from a cousin….she is related to Dada Vaswani)
I would be very grateful if you could help me with this.
 Regards

Dear Shakun,

I was browsing through your excellent web site in search of my family origins. We are Wadhwani’s from Hyderabad Sindh and was looking to get additional information about my family tree. I contacted the Institute of Sindhology in Pakistan and Mr Shoukat Shoro responded with reference to the book “Sindhi Hindun ji tarikh” written by Bherumal Maharchand Advani. Hence my search began and I came across your website. Your website gave me information about Wadhwanis but I would like to trace my family tree. Here is some information I have: On my father’s side the names are: Bhojraj Bulchand Wadhwani (my father) My grandfather’s name is Bulchand Wadhwani (do not remember my my grandfather’s father’s name). If you could provide any information or give me direction as to how to pursue this further, I would really appreciate it. Thank you for all the work you do for the Sindhi community.

Warm regards – Robin Wadhwani

Would be great if you could help with their whereabouts Regards Jean Rozario Australiajean.rozario@cmps.com.au

I would like to thank you for this very informative site. My grandfather is Roopchand Varoomal. He was originally from India and lived in the Philippines. I do not know much about my grandfather’s origins as he passed away when my mother, who is born in 1937, was only 14 or so. This was after WWII. He lived in the Philippines in the 1930-1940s. He worked in a “bazaar” (Udharam) in Davao City. I was doing some internet searches and even bumped into a Santo Tomas Internment Camp record and his name was amongst those who were confined during the mayhem that was the Japanese occupation in the Philippines. I do not know if it was the same person. We surely did not know about him being in an internment camp during WWII. I certainly would appreciate any information or history about this last name’s (Varoomal) or his family’s origins in India. Thank you very much. Best Regards, Karina S.
